Description
Origin
Beaucarnea recurvata, better known as Nolina, is an exotic indoor plant originating from eastern Mexico. It belongs to the Agavaceae family and grows in dry and rocky regions. Despite its tropical origin, the Nolina is well adapted to various conditions and is a popular choice for interiors.
Characteristics
The Nolina, also known as the “elephant’s foot” or “pony-tail palm,” has a remarkable appearance. Its most notable feature is its woody, spherical trunk which acts as a water reservoir. From its top, long, ribbon-like drooping leaves grow, which are green in color. In adulthood, the Nolina can bloom, producing small greenish-white flowers.
Care
As for care, the Nolina is quite an easy indoor plant. It likes a lot of light, but direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent leaf burn. Although the plant tolerates drought, regular watering is necessary. However, overwatering should be avoided, as this can cause root rot. It is recommended to water the plant only when the top few centimeters of soil are dry. Pruning is not necessary, except for removing dead or yellow leaves. Hoffman’s Feed, Green and Trim Growers Mix is a well-recommended type of potting soil for Beaucarnea Recurvata.
