Origin
The Beaucarnea shaped like a globe is native to Mexico and belongs to the Asparagaceae family. This unique plant genus includes about 30 different types. In nature, the globe-shaped Beaucarnea primarily grows in savannas and dry forests. The plant tolerates extreme drought by storing water in its globe-shaped trunk, making it a true survivor typical in arid regions.
Characteristics
The characteristics of the globe-shaped Beaucarnea, also known as the Elephant’s Foot, are its globe-shaped trunk and fine shoots emerging from the top of the trunk. These shoots develop into long, thin green leaves. Under ideal conditions, the globe-shaped Beaucarnea can reach an impressive height of 8 meters. Nevertheless, the plant grows rather slowly and is therefore generally suited for use as a houseplant.
Care
For healthy growth, the globe-shaped Beaucarnea needs a bright spot, but it also tolerates partial shade. The plant requires a moderate amount of water, especially during the summer months, as it stores moisture in its globe-shaped trunk to protect itself against drier periods. Too much water can lead to root rot. The globe-shaped Beaucarnea does not have specific nutritional needs, a universal houseplant fertilizer is sufficient. As the plant grows slowly, it does not often need to be repotted.
