Description
Origin
The ball-shaped Beaucarnea originates from Mexico and belongs to the Asparagaceae family. This unique plant genus includes about 30 different types. In the wild, the ball-shaped Beaucarnea mainly grows in savannas and dry forests. The plant tolerates extreme drought by storing water in its ball-shaped trunk and is thus a true typical survivor in arid regions.
Characteristics
The characteristics of the ball-shaped Beaucarnea, also known as Elephant’s Foot, are its ball-shaped trunk and fine shoots that emerge from the top of the trunk. These shoots develop into long and thin green leaves. Under ideal conditions, the ball-shaped Beaucarnea can reach an impressive height of 8 meters. Nevertheless, the plant grows rather slowly and is generally suitable for use as an indoor plant.
Care
For healthy growth, the ball-shaped Beaucarnea needs a bright location, but it also tolerates partial shade. The plant requires a moderate amount of water, especially during the summer months, as it stores moisture in its ball-shaped trunk to protect against drier periods. Too much water can lead to root rot. The ball-shaped Beaucarnea does not have specific nutritional needs, a universal indoor plant fertilizer suffices. Since the plant grows slowly, it does not often need to be repotted.
