Description
Origin
The Areca Catechu, also known as the Betel palm, originally finds its origin in the tropical forests of Malaysia and the Philippines. That’s where the plant mainly grows in its natural environment, primarily in coastal areas and on mountainsides. Over the centuries, the Betel palm has spread to other parts of the world, including the Indian subcontinent and the Pacific islands.
Characteristics
The Areca Catechu is known for its tall, slender trunk that can reach up to 20 meters in height. The leaves are divided into many thin leaf blades and can be up to two meters long. At the top of the plant, flowers appear, followed by small red fruits. These fruits are called “betel nuts” and are traditionally used in Asian culture.
Care
Caring for the Areca Catechu requires some attention. The palm prefers high humidity and a temperature between 16 and 24 degrees Celsius. In its natural environment, the plant grows in the shade, so it is recommended to choose a bright location without direct sunlight. It is important to keep the plant’s soil constantly moist, but excess water can cause root rot.
