Description
Origin
The Alocasia sarawakensis ‘Yucatan princess’, also known as the ‘Elephant Ear’ plant, is native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. This plant species is primarily found in Borneo, an island situated between Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei.
Characteristics
The ‘Yucatan princess’ is a remarkable plant due to its large dark green leaves, which often have contrasting undersides of pink or burgundy. The plant can reach about 90 to 120 centimeters tall in optimal growing conditions. This type of Alocasia is a fast-growing, rhizomatous plant, which means it grows from a rhizome, a type of underground stem.
Care
The Alocasia sarawakensis ‘Yucatan princess’ requires a warm and humid environment, similar to its original tropical habitat. The plant needs a place with lots of indirect light, but not direct sunlight. It prefers well-drained soil and requires regular but moderate watering. It is recommended to let the water level decrease between waterings to prevent root rot.
