Description
Origin
The Alocasia sarawakensis ‘Yucatan princess’, also known as the ‘Elephant Ear’ plant, is native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. This plant species is mainly found in Borneo, an island located between Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei.
Characteristics
The ‘Yucatan princess’ is a remarkable plant due to its large dark green leaves that often have a contrasting pink or burgundy underside. The plant can reach about 90 to 120 centimeters in height under optimal growing conditions. This type of Alocasia is a fast-growing rhizome plant, which means it grows from a rhizome, a type of underground stem.
Care
The Alocasia sarawakensis ‘Yucatan princess’ requires a warm and humid environment, similar to its original tropical habitat. The plant needs a spot with plenty of indirect light, but not full sun. It prefers well-drained soil and requires regular, but moderate watering. It is recommended to let the water level drop between waterings to prevent root rot.
