Description
Origin
The Aeschynanthus ‘Mona Lisa’, also known as lipstickplant, originates from the tropical forests of Asia. Primarily, the plant can be found in countries such as Malaysia, the Philippines, and New Guinea. This plant typically grows on tree twists, where it adapts to humid conditions and exists as an epiphyte, a plant that grows on other plants.
Characteristics
The Aeschynanthus ‘Mona Lisa’ is characterized by its remarkable flowers and its shiny green leaves. The lipstickplant is so named because of the bright red, tube-shaped flowers that emerge from a dark, almost black calyx, resembling a protruding lipstick. The flowers grow in clusters at the ends of the hanging shoots and can reach a length of up to 10 centimeters. The plant’s green leaf is lance-shaped and can reach a length of 15 cm.
Care
Caring for the Aeschynanthus ‘Mona Lisa’ requires specific attention. The plant strongly prefers moist, well-drained soil and a warm environment with high humidity. Although the plant can survive in lower light conditions, it is best to place it in a bright location without direct sunlight. During the growing period, the plant should be regularly fertilized. During the winter months, the plant enters a dormant period, requiring less water and fertilization.
