Description

Origin
The Acer pal. ‘Shishigashira’ is also known as ‘Lion’s Head’ due to the characteristic shape of its foliage. It is a popular variety of Japanese maple, originating from East Asia. It has been present in Japanese gardens for several centuries before reaching the West in the 19th century.

Characteristics

The Acer pal. ‘Shishigashira’ is a slow-growing deciduous shrub that typically measures between 1.5 and 2.5 meters tall. It is known for its uniquely curled green leaves that turn remarkable shades of orange and red in the fall. This contrast offers a striking visual appeal. The ‘Lion’s Head’ maple has a compact shape and branched structure, making it a magnificent ornamental plant.

Care

The Acer pal. ‘Shishigashira’ requires specific growing conditions. The plant thrives best in well-draining soil, preferably rich in organic matter. Although it can tolerate some drought, it needs regular watering. It is recommended to place the plant in an environment with partial to full sunlight, but with protection from intense afternoon sun to prevent leaf burn. Pruning is not essential but can be useful to maintain the shape of the plant; however, this should be done carefully to avoid damaging the tree.
