Description
Origin
The Acer pal. ‘Sangokaku’, more commonly known as the Japanese Maple ‘Sangokaku’, originates from East Asia. This species of tree can be found in countries such as Japan, Korea, and China. The tree was introduced into the western world due to its unique beauty and is therefore often used in gardens and parks.
Characteristics
The Acer pal. ‘Sangokaku’ is a medium-sized tree that can reach about 5 meters in height. This tree stands out especially for its bright coral red bark, which is quite unusual for trees. In addition, the light green hand-shaped leaves in spring and summer, which turn bright yellow or orange in autumn, provide a magnificent array of colors. The tree also produces small bright pink flowers in the spring.
Care
For the Acer pal. ‘Sangokaku’, a spot in partial shade or sun is ideal, although it can also grow in shade. The tree prefers a nurturing and well-drained soil and is quite drought resistant once established. The ‘Sangokaku’ requires little pruning, but the removal of dead or damaged branches can help maintain the tree’s health and appearance. It is recommended to water the tree sufficiently during dry periods, especially during the first year after planting, to promote good root development.
