Description
Origin
The Acer palmatum ‘Fire Glow’ is a variety of Acer palmatum, originating from East Asia, particularly Japan. It was introduced and predominantly cultivated in Western countries for use in gardens and parks, due to its notably vibrant autumn colors.
Characteristics
The ‘Fire Glow’ is appreciated for its unique red leaves that shine throughout the growing season. This slow-growing shrub can reach a height of 2 to 3 meters and grows in an ascending conical shape. The colorful leaves are palmate-shaped and become brighter and intensely red with more sun exposure. In the fall, the color changes to a deep red, almost purple.
Care
Despite its exotic appearance, the Acer palmatum ‘Fire Glow’ is surprisingly easy to care for. The plant thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soil and prefers a location with partial shade. Regular pruning will help maintain its shape and remove dead or excess branches. Although the ‘Fire Glow’ is more drought-resistant than many other Acer varieties, it requires regular watering, especially during hot summer months. Remember to provide it with some extra frost protection during winter in colder climates.
