Description
Origin
The Acer palmatum dissectum ‘Garnet’ is a variety of Japanese maple originally from East Asia. It’s a popular species in landscape architecture and landscaping, particularly in regions with a temperate climate. This species was first introduced to the West in the 19th century.
Characteristics
The Acer pal. diss. ‘Garnet’ is distinguished by its remarkable foliage color, a deep red. The leaves are fine and delicately cut, which gives the plant an elegant appearance. In autumn, the leaf color changes to a magnificent red-orange hue. The ‘Garnet’ remains relatively small compared to other maples, generally reaching a height of 2 to 3 meters, with an equivalent spread.
Care
The Acer pal. diss. ‘Garnet’ requires moderate care. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and needs well-draining soil. The plant prefers slightly acidic soil, but can also survive in neutral or slightly alkaline conditions. Regular pruning helps to maintain the tree’s shape and size but is not absolutely necessary due to its slow growth.
