Description

Origin
The Acca sellowiana, also known as Feijoa or Pineapple Guava, originates from the highlands of southern Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, and northern Argentina. The plant was first scientifically described in the early 19th century. Today, feijoa is cultivated worldwide, notably in New Zealand and the United States.

Characteristics

The Acca sellowiana is an evergreen shrub or small tree that can reach a height of 3 to 7 meters. The plant produces edible fruits that resemble guavas in both texture and taste. The oval fruits are green and have a waxy structured skin. The flowers of the plant are very striking, featuring long bright red pistils and pink and white flower petals.

Care

The Acca sellowiana is a hardy plant that thrives in a wide range of climates, from subtropical to Mediterranean. The plant prefers full sun or partial shade and well-draining soil. It is a relatively slow-growing plant, but once established, it can develop significantly. An annual supply of fertilizer in spring is recommended to promote abundant fruit production. Watering is necessary during the summer months, although this plant is drought tolerant. Pruning can be done after harvest, in late fall or early winter.
